What Is a Tongue Tie or Lip Tie?
A tongue tie (ankyloglossia) happens when the thin piece of tissue under the tongue (lingual frenulum) is too short or tight, limiting tongue movement.
A lip tie is when the tissue connecting the upper lip to the gum (labial frenulum) is too tight, restricting lip movement.
Common Signs in Babies:
- Trouble latching during breastfeeding
- Poor weight gain
- Clicking sounds while feeding
- Gas, reflux, or colic symptoms
- Long feeding sessions
- Sore nipples or pain for mum
In Older Children or Adults:
- Speech delays or difficulty
- Problems with eating/swallowing
- Trouble sticking tongue out or moving it side to side
- Gaps between front teeth (with lip tie)
- Difficulty playing wind instruments or kissing
Treatment:
A quick and simple procedure called a frenectomy or laser release can free the tongue or lip. It’s often done in minutes, with minimal discomfort and quick healing—especially when done early.
