What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental treatment that lightens the color of your teeth by removing stains and discolouration. It’s one of the most popular ways to quickly improve a smile.

Why Do Teeth Get Stained?

Common causes include:

  • Coffee, tea, red wine, cola and dark foods
  • Smoking or chewing tobacco
  • Natural aging - enamel thins, dentin shows through
  • Some medications (e.g. certain antibiotics)
  • Poor oral hygiene

Types of Teeth Whitening

1. Professional (In-Office) Whitening

  • Done at the dental clinic
  • Dentist applies a high-strength bleaching gel (usually hydrogen peroxide)
  • Sometimes combined with a special light or laser to boost results
  • Takes about 1 hour
  • Can lighten teeth several shades in a single visit

2. Professional Take-Home Whitening Kits

  • Custom trays made to fit your teeth
  • You wear the trays with a whitening gel for a set time daily (usually 1–2 weeks)
  • More gradual than in-office, but very effective

3. Over-the-Counter (OTC) Whitening

  • Whitening strips, pens or generic trays
  • Less powerful than professional options
  • Results vary - slower and less dramatic

Benefits of Professional Whitening

  • Fast results
  • Even whitening
  • Supervised by a dentist - safer for teeth and gums
  • Stronger whitening agents than store-bought products

Possible Side Effects

  • Temporary tooth sensitivity (common)
  • Mild gum irritation if gel touches soft tissue
  • Overuse or misuse of OTC kits can damage enamel

Who Can Whiten Their Teeth?

Most adults with healthy teeth and gums are good candidates. Whitening is not recommended for:

  • Children
  • Pregnant women
  • People with untreated dental issues

Note: Whitening only works on natural enamel - it won’t change the colour of crowns, fillings or veneers.

How Long Does Whitening Last?

Results can last from several months to a few years, depending on:

  • Diet and lifestyle (e.g. coffee, smoking)
  • Oral hygiene
  • Touch-up treatments

Tip: Using a straw for dark drinks, brushing regularly and avoiding tobacco can help maintain your results longer.
